- Electrolytes declares 500 mg sodium, 200 mg potassium, 50 mg calcium, 25 mg magnesium and 700 mg chloride per serving. A 50-serving container is listed at $44.99 for a one-time purchase: approximately $0.90 per serving.
These are dated US price snapshots before tax and shipping, not subscription offers. Both pages describe the products as NSF Certified for Sport. We have not independently checked the certification register. A certification claim is not evidence that either drink produces better race results.

We therefore do not describe it as carbohydrate-free or calorie-free, or count it as a specified carbohydrate contribution to a fueling plan. Its exact nutrition panel needs checking before doing that calculation.
Compare quantities before comparing prices
A manufacturer serving is a packaging convention. It is not a common unit of performance, nor a prescription for every runner. Dividing the container price by its serving count is useful bookkeeping, but it does not establish which product is better value for your session.
Start with what you already plan to consume: drinks, gels and food. Record carbohydrate separately from sodium, and record fluid separately from both. Then check whether the mix fills a gap or duplicates something already in the plan. Increasing the quantity of a mixed product changes several inputs together; it cannot adjust one ingredient independently.

What the studies do—and do not—show
Research on sports drinks helps frame the question, but it does not validate these specific BPN products.
A small 2017 study in seven male ice hockey players found better simulated performance and lower perceived effort with a carbohydrate-electrolyte drink than with progressive dehydration. Fluid and carbohydrate changed together, so the trial cannot isolate carbohydrate's contribution or establish superiority over an adequately hydrated comparator. It also used a hockey simulation rather than distance running.
Results are not uniformly positive. In a 2025 crossover trial involving twelve trained endurance athletes, drinks containing dextrose and sodium, with or without additional ingredients, did not significantly improve time to exhaustion or power output relative to water under the tested cycling protocol. The drinks were consumed before exercise. This is a null finding in a particular protocol, not proof that carbohydrate is useless during every long event.
A separate rehydration study in eight recreational athletes found greater urine output after flavored water than after coconut water or a carbohydrate-electrolyte beverage, but the overall post-rehydration fluid-status difference between beverages was not statistically significant. That distinguishes one measured endpoint from a broad claim of better hydration. It neither ranks the two BPN mixes nor proves that more minerals mean better performance.
Who should seek individual advice first?
If you have kidney disease, heart failure, high blood pressure, or a prescribed sodium, potassium or fluid restriction, discuss the exact label with your clinician before adding an electrolyte mix. The 500 mg sodium serving must fit your individual plan; this is not a universally safe allowance or a target to reach. NIDDK explains why sodium and potassium intake may need individual adjustment in kidney disease, while NHLBI notes that heart failure care may include salt and fluid limits. If you take medicines affecting fluid or electrolyte balance, ask your pharmacist to check the product against your medication list. - Are you trying to account for carbohydrate intake, fluid intake, or sodium intake? These are separate questions.
- What do your other drinks and foods already contribute?
- Have you checked the exact flavor's nutrition panel, serving size and preparation instructions?
- Does the price calculation use the purchase option you actually intend to use?
- If banned-substance screening matters to you, have you verified the exact product in the current certification register?
