For a compound taken daily, the clock barely moves the result. Creatine works by saturating a store in your muscle over days and weeks, not by acting in the window around a single session – so whether you take it before or after training is one of the least consequential decisions in the whole protocol. A 2021 review of the timing literature lands in the same place: the emerging signal points to taking creatine after exercise rather than before, while methodological limitations preclude a solid conclusion.
So the direction is not nothing, but it is not a settled result either. The design that would settle it – a large, adequately powered head-to-head trial with a meaningful performance endpoint – has not produced a robust, repeated result. Treat anyone claiming a decisive timing advantage as running ahead of the evidence.
The tier here matters. A plausible mechanism for "post-workout is better" (elevated blood flow, insulin response to a post-training meal) is exactly that – plausible. It has not translated into a reliable clinical or performance difference, and a mechanistic story is not comparative human evidence.
Three numbers people quietly merge
The timing question is usually a distraction from the numbers that actually decide whether creatine does anything for you. Keep these apart:
- What the body makes and gets from diet. The body synthesises creatine endogenously, and meat and fish contribute more. Vegetarians and vegans typically start from a lower muscle store, which is the group most likely to see a change from supplementing.
- The dose used in trials. Research protocols commonly use a modest daily maintenance intake, sometimes preceded by a short higher-intake loading phase to saturate the store faster. The loading phase changes how quickly you reach the ceiling, not the ceiling itself.

If any variable is going to change your result, it is more likely to be form and consistency than timing.
